The University of Montana offers sign language interpreters to assist hearing impaired students in the classroom. Kaelyn Kelly and I saw the action first hand, trying to learn math in a whole new language.

Tex Tix the movie. Kind of a movie, short epic really

"Acting for Film" turned into a crash course amateur in film-making. I'll stress the amateur on my part. Here's the video I had my name all over like a Kevin Smith movie, for better or worse: writer, editor, and one-half of the cinematographers. It's a little rough around the edges, especially the sound design where it was my first foray into that venture, but the exercise was for the actors to get used to the "ready, set, act" nature of the beast. Patrolling the Big Sky: Trooper Werner

The homegrown Montana PBS show, 'Montana Journal', brings the viewing audience into the lives of the people of our state. My Advanced Video Storytelling class completed a half-hour documentary on the Montana Highway Patrol entitled "Patrolling the Big Sky." I flew five-hundred miles to ride along with Trooper Derek Werner, dedicated patrolman and Native American tribal member. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it's like for a cross-deputized officer to enforce the law on the people of his state, and also the people of his tribe.

I shot and edited the segment together, and Jake Stevenson rode in the back seat as the reporter in the field.

Stop-motion animation: Code Red!

Here's the final video project for my Stop-Motion Animation class. It was a lot of fun breaking out of the journalism world for a little while and creating this slice of film. The sequel, Naga Chess, is currently in the pre-production/storyboard stage. Stay tuned...

When Griz Fly...

Happy to say I just received news from the BEA Award Festival that this news package received an 'honorable mention,' essentially 4th place, in their sports reporting category. Not bad considering it was an outlier compared to the football stories and previews for upcoming basketball seasons ahead of it on the winner's list.

Here's the video I shot for my advanced TV Directing & Photography class on a group of winter athletes turning their passion into a college sport. The Zoo Crew is a new group of competitive skiers and snowboarders founded by students from the University of Montana. The segment aired in its entirety on the student-produced UM News, and the 10/17/10 broadcast on KPAX 8 in Missoula, Montana. I did the video photography and editing, Jake Stevenson reported on behalf of UM News.

Death Inc. - Tom Olson & Scott Crowder

Tom Olson and his nephew-in-law, Scott Crowder, run Bozeman Granite Works. Together they craft memorials commemorating beloved family and friends who have passed on. I spent one afternoon with these guys on the eve of Thanksgiving. They were great, funny people, and they're dedicated to their craft. I shot, edited, wrote, and acted as "the reporter in the field" for this segment.

Death Inc. - Ron Brothers

Ron Brothers owns and operates Brothers Mortuary and Crematory in Hamilton, MT. On call 24 hours a day, Brothers works to make the final event in a person's life a gratifying experience. Katie Mansfield joined me as my reporter as Ron took us on a tour of his facilities in one historic old house. I shot, edited, and wrote the voice over for this segment of the show
